What is chemical resistance?
The term chemical resistance refers to the chemical resistance of materials. Thus it is the ability of a material to withstand destruction processes triggered by reactions between environment and surface. If a material is chemically stressed or if its chemical resistance is poor, this can lead to corrosion and accelerate the fracture of the material. In the case of components or machines made of this material, this has a negative effect on their service life or leads to their failure.
Basically, three categories can be distinguished:
- chemically resistant (little or no impairment of the material)
- conditionally chemically resistant (weak to moderate attack of the material)
- chemically unstable (strong attack to complete destruction of the material)
